 Q. I want to open a tanning salon...i have a few questions on legal issues & business plans. help?!? there is a specific name for a tanning salon i plan on opening within the next three years. however, i googled the name and found it to be used by another salon in fl. can i still use this name? also, is there a program where i can start a business plan little by little? i worked at a tanning salon for some time and i loved it. i am almost done with my degree in business and work for a major company. i plan on saving until i have enough to begin. any advice is appreciated! thanks!!
"The success of a tanning salon will not hinge on its..."
If you have a degree in business you will know about market research. Put it into action.
The success of a tanning salon will not hinge on its name - don't hang on to a certain name.
You appear to be driven by emotion about wanting a tanning salon. Competition? Barriers to entry?
Drive your business by your head, not your heart.
Basic business - how much will it cost, how much will it bring in. Of course you can do business little by little - work out what you need to get started and if it makes sense then go for it.
Step outside your emotions - if it was your best friend asking these questions what would you - with your business degree - advise them to do?
And if that is what you would tell your best friend then why would you do anything different?
Good luck with your enterprise.

 Q. Opening a nail and tanning salon? is it a good business to get into? i live on the jersey shore. i'm 23 years old. my dream is to open a nail and tanning salon day spa kinda thing. i have about 53,000 in savings. i want to start from scratch. i want all bran new high end beds, a mystic spray tan machine, aromatherapy steam bed room, and a whole section for mani's and pedi's. i would stay open late 8pm for nails and midnight for tanning. do you think i have enough money to start? do you think its a profitable business? should i look into buying a salon already open and remodel it from there or start my own? help!
"Google "small business development center"..."
53K is probably not enough money.
Google "small business development center" + your city.
They're established by large universities and can answer all of your questions.
All that fun stuff is fine, but you need to take care of boring stuff like insurance, taxes, wages, etc. too.

 Q. Me and my husband are wanting to start a business we need ideas what about a tanning salon? we wouldnt know how much it would cost to run it or even open one, we were also considering a used clothing and furniture store but were we live there are a lot of those.. i dont know if you have any suggestions please tell me
"Write to me with more details..."
This question is difficult to answer. There are not enough details about you or your location. What do you have more of to invest - Time or Money? Also, have you considered questions like demographics? How many customers are available in your area? What age groups? Who has the most money to buy what you want to offer? I can offer free counseling but I will need more info. Write to me with more details. Success comes from preparation. Make sure you are ready before you begin.

 Q. What is the least painful way to get out of a tanning business? my husband & i opened a very small tanning salon last jan. & have found that the time involved is too much for the $ we are making in return. we took out a $25k loan to start the business and am struggling to make ends meet these last 2 months of the year. we have had the business up for sale since sept. & have had no serious inquiries. we want out at least by june of next year with the least amt of debt possible. any advice?
"You picked a really bad business venture..."
Unfortunately, you picked a really bad business venture. The best thing to do is shut it down NOW and sell off the equipment, etc. for the best price you can get.
Since it doesn't look like there will be people interested in buying the business from you, you'll end up having to do that anyway, and the only difference between now and later is the additional costs you'll be bleeding out.
So why put off the inevitable and lose even more?
CLOSE IT NOW and cut your losses as best you can by selling off everything that's possible. Unfortunately, you won't get back your total investment and it will be a painful and expensive loss, but successful people realize when something is working out, cut their losses, and figure out what they can learn from that experience.
It was before I met him, but my husband once lost $25,000 on a bad real estate investment and another $20,000 on a bad business venure, and we just lost some money that we invested in a friend's business (but they're still our friends; like you, it wasn't anything they did wrong, it was just bad timing for a market that suddenly dried up).
Fortunately, my husband learned enough from his prior business losses that he (and me too) made a lot of smarter decisions afterwards, so out lost investment to our friends really won't affect us much financially.
And that's the way you need to view this. It's a learning experience. What could you do differently next time?
Whatever you do, don't take it as a sign to not try something else again in the future.
EVERY SINGLE SUCCESSFUL PERSON has at LEAST one catastrophic failure in their past!

"Open a business bank account

a) Create an LLC with your home state
b) Get an IRS Federal Tax ID (Online and Easy at www.irs.gov)
c) Open a Business Bank account
d) Have a Commercial Real estate agent find you a store front that gets LOTS of traffic (ie: Next to a Super Market)
e) Rent or Buy lots of tanning booths
f) Remodel the store front to suit your needs
g) Have a grand opening and get a promo going to get people locked into contracts. Something like 1 month free if you sign a 1/yr contract.
NOTE: And make sure you get specs in the contract that say you aren't liable if they get cancer from using your machines. Get good legal counsel to draft your contracts.
