If the check is addressed to you solely,
you can keep it.
But if they have given you a two-party check requiring your signature and the home repair contractor`s signature,
you will need to spend the check for actual home repairs.
It just depends on the insurance company;
if they advised you a specific contractor for home repairs,
they might check if you actually spend the check for repairs.
On the other hand,
if they allowed you to choose any contractor for the repair,
they might not check if you actually sought for home repair services and you can keep the money.
