ComEd can send a shut-off notice after the first missed payment although,
ComEd will usually wait for 2 missed payments before mailing out a shut-off notice.
The notice will give you 5-days to make payment of the past due balance or enter into a Deferred Payment Arrangement to avoid being disconnected.
There are a lot of rules that the Utility company has to follow when it comes to ȁCDisconnectionȁD,
Deferred Payment ArrangementsȁD,
use of a ȁCMedical CertificateȁD to avoid disconnection,
and non-shut-off days,
where the utility company is not permitted to shut-off service,
such as during the ȁCHeating SeasonȁD when the temperature will be (according the National Weather Service for you area)
32 Degrees or lower in a 24 hour period (example:
50 degrees during the day but the temperature drops to 29 degrees after mid-night)
or ȁCWinter MonthsȁD between December 1st and March 31st (shut-offs can occur on April Fools Day- how fitting?).
Beware that ComEd will mislead you when it comes to your rights.
