Tax bracket--$30,000 to $60,000--contained over one-third of all taxpayers,
who earned 38.6 percent of all income and paid 40.8 percent of all federal PIT.
Only 10.7 percent of taxpayers had incomes over $60,000,
but they accounted for 28.4 percent of all income;
they paid 43.0 percent of all federal PIT and about 47.5 percent of provincial PITs (excluding Quebec,
for which comparable information is not available).
20.4 million Canadians filed income tax returns,
but only 14.0 million--68 percent--paid tax.
Many of those 6.4 million non-taxpayers filed to qualify for the child tax benefit,
the refundable GST credit,
or the provincial tax credit programs administered through Revenue Canada`s income tax collection system.
